Tunnels
A look at some of the many and varied canal tunnels on the navigable system. What actually constitutes a tunnel is open to debate. In its purest sense a tunnel is a hole bored through the ground, and indeed most of the examples here conform to that definition. However tunnels can also be created by the cut and cover process (Museum, Cunard, St Nicholas Place) or the cover & fill process (Galton, Summit). Where canals have been restored through built up areas tunnels have been created by underpinning buildings and then excavating the tunnel below (Bates). Sometimes tunnels are replaced by bridges but retain their tunnel name (Deansgate) whlist others are opened out completely (Armitage, Fenny Compton). Some tunnels really are and always have been bridges but have traditionally always been known as tunnels (Broad Street).
